In this enlightening book, author, lecturer, and mystic Marianne Williamson discusses the mechanics of mysticism rather than its theories, making the book practical.

Everyday Grace: Having Hope, Finding Forgiveness, and Making Miracles is divided into three main sections: “Thoughts of Grace;” “A Day of Grace;” and “A Life of Grace.” Each section heading is divided into sub-sections.

This arrangement makes it easy to follow her points without getting lost in a sea of mystical rhetoric. It renders the book practical and understandable for those seeking a deeper spiritual life. Williamson says: “The mystic path is a journey of personal transformation.”

Thoughts of Grace

Here, the Mystical Wands are introduced. These wands are described as “tools” or “supplies.”

Williamson says: “What are the mystic’s supplies? They are spiritual principles, much like magical wands in their capacity to turn any situation into a crucible of miraculous transformation.”

  • Wand 1: Miracles Happen
  • Wand 2: The Angels Are Waiting for Us
  • Wand 3: Thoughts of Judgment Block the Light
  • Wand 4: The End Is Inherent in the Means
  • Wand 5: Sacred Silence Rights the Universe

The chapters are short and easily digestible, a vital element of this book because the information in them is important for those seeking spiritual transformation.

“No matter what the circumstance, we can choose to infuse it with light,” Williamson says. This is certainly a reason to foster faith.

A Day of Grace

This section carries the reader through a 12-hour period from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. with a different subject covered in each hour. The subjects range from an admonition to begin each day spiritually to dealing with guilt and grief.

  • Starting the Day
  • Hearing the News
  • Working
  • Needing Work
  • Being Happy
  • Feeling Jealous
  • Making Decisions
  • Feeling Bored
  • Arguing
  • Hoping Against Hope
  • Feeling Guilty
  • Grieving
  • Learning Compassion

Williamson herself sums this up best when she says: “Hour by hour, day by day, we can find more light within ourselves, and the world will begin to shine.”

A Life of Grace

This final section of the book deals with some specific societal traditions and discusses how what was meant to be holy has been secularised.

It is up to each individual, Williamson exhorts, to decide to make each moment matter and to choose the path that moves them closer to God.

  • Ritual
  • Sabbath
  • Holidays
  • Relationships
  • Community

Williamson says: “It’s not up to us where we are going – but how we get there, and when, is determined by the choices every one of us makes every moment of every day.”

Everyday Grace is an easy-to-read book for those seeking a deeper spiritual connection with God, and a fuller connection to the world and to themselves. The words are simple, but the ideas they convey are powerful wands, indeed.

Williamson says: “Every situation is a lesson in becoming who we are capable of being.”
